In less than a week, the United States will experience a total solar eclipse, one of the first in decades. People from all over the United States and the world are traveling to cities and towns in the direct path! While Deep Creek Lake isn’t in the direct path, we will have a slightly better view than nearby cities like Pittsburgh and the rest of Maryland. If you haven’t booked a home yet, this is a great excuse to plan a last minute trip to the lake to witness this incredible space display!

Timing

For Deep Creek Lake, the eclipse will start around 1:12 PM. Peak obscurity is calculated for 2:28 PM and last contact set around 3:57 PM. Right now, the forecast for Monday looks extremely good for viewing. Weather in Garrett County can be anything but compliant, however, we’re confident Mother Nature will help us out with this one.

Watching

To watch the eclipse, you either need certified safe glasses or a plan to watch the image mirrored or projected. Back in the old days, eclipse viewers would use pieces of paper with one hole to project the image on the ground or create a reflective viewing area out of boxes.  It is very dangerous to look at the sun without proper eye protection. Since there will not be a total eclipse viewable in our area, there is never a safe time to look at the sun unprotected. Sunglasses, even wearing two pairs, will not be enough. You can still find ISO Certified glasses online, but not for long! If you don’t snag a pair of glasses, don’t worry, two of our state parks are offering viewing parties! New Germany State Park and The Discovery Center at Deep Creek Lake State Park will both be providing glasses and information regarding the eclipse.

Where to View

The good news about the afternoon timing is that the eclipse should be visible from just about anywhere that the sky is visible. Keep an eye on your favorite locals spots to see who’s hosting eclipse watching parties! Watching from the water or a dock is also a great option that will make this memory stand out that much more.

If you couldn’t tell, we’re pretty excited about the eclipse! Whether you watch it at Deep Creek Lake or not, we hope everyone gets a chance to experience it.
