Take a Relaxing Drive Around Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County!

From mid-September to mid-October, the mountains are alive with beautiful reds, oranges, yellows, and browns as autumn descends on Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County with crisp temperatures and clean air. The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce sponsors two wonderful driving tours each year to highlight the best mountain views, sweeping pastures, historic sites, and natural landmarks.


Regular Fall Foliage Driving Tour:
This route is 32 miles and the approximate drive time is 1 hour and 5 minutes. Bring a picnic lunch along and enjoy it at Broadford Lake State Park!

Directions:

  1. Begin at the Garrett County Visitors Center at 15 Visitors Center Drive, McHenry, MD 21541.
  2. Left onto Garrett Highway/Route 219 South.
  3. Left onto Sang Run Road and travel 0.5 miles.
  4. Left onto Hoyes Run Road and travel approximately 3 miles.
  5. Left onto Oakland Sang Run Road and travel approximately 2 miles.
  6. Right onto Swallow Falls Road and travel 2.5 miles
  7. Continue onto Herrington Manor Road and travel 4.5 miles.
  8. Continue onto West Liberty Street and travel approximately 0.284 mile to the Fort Alice Trail. The Fort Alice Trail provides an enjoyable hike while visiting the former site of the 88 Bridge. Please visit the website for additional details.
  9. Continue on West Liberty Street.
  10. Left onto Bradley Lane.
  11. Continue on West Center Street and travel approximately 0.5 miles.
  12. Right onto South 3rd Street (Garrett Highway/Route 219) and travel approximately 0.5 miles.
  13. Left onto East Oak Street (Garrett Highway/Route 219) and travel 0.5 mile.
  14. Continue onto MD-135 East and travel approximately 1 mile.
  15. Right onto G Street in Mountain Lake Park.
  16. Visit the historic Mountain Lake Park Museum/Ticket Office, 301 G Street, Mountain Lake Park. Call 301-334-4314 for additional details.
  17. Turn back onto G Street, heading towards Maryland Highway/MD-135.
  18. Continue through the intersection and take a slight right onto Deer Park Avenue and travel 0.25 miles.
  19. Right onto Pittsburgh Avenue and travel towards Broadford Lake Park (Recreation Lane). Broadford Park features picnic areas, swimming, fishing, and playgrounds. Please call 301-334-8218 or visit their website for additional details.
  20. Head back towards Deer Park Avenue.
  21. Right onto Broadford Road and travel approximately 2.5 miles.
  22. Left onto Kings Run Road and travel 1.8 miles.
  23. Right onto Garrett Highway/Route 219 and travel approximately 1 mile.
  24. Left onto Foster Road and travel 2 miles.
  25. Right onto Bray School Road.
  26. Slight left onto Lake Shore Drive and travel 3.66 miles.
  27. Left onto Garrett Highway/Route 219 and travel approximately 3 miles.
  28. Left on Visitors Center Drive ending at the Garrett County Visitors Center on the left.


Extended Fall Foliage Driving Tour:
This route is 61 miles and the approximate drive time is 1 hour and 41 minutes. Bring a picnic lunch along and enjoy it at New Germany State Park, or dine at the historical Casselman Inn!

Directions:

  1. Begin at the Garrett County Visitors Center at 15 Visitors Center Drive, McHenry, MD 21541.
  2. Left onto Garrett Highway/Route 219 South and travel approximately 12 miles.
  3. Merge onto I-68 East.
  4. Take exit 19 for Bittinger Road/MD-495.
  5. Travel to the top of the exit ramp. Left onto Bittinger Road/MD-495 North.
  6. Travel to the intersection. Right onto Main Street/National Pike. Along Route 40 (The Historic National Road) you can see these historic attractions and structures:

    • Casselman River Bridge State Park – please visit their website for additional details.

  7. Continue on Route 40 and travel approximately 8.42 miles.
  8. Right onto Avilton Lonaconing Road and travel approximately 3 miles
  9. Right to stay on Avilton Lonaconing Road and travel 0.367 miles.
  10. Left to stay on Avilton Lonaconing Road and travel another 2 miles.
  11. Left onto Frostburg Road.
  12. Left toward Mt Aetna Road and travel approximately 0.5 mile to the Mt. Aetna Trail System. This area offers a beautiful place to take a fall hike.
  13. Travel back to east on Mt Aetna Road and to Avilton Lonaconing Road.
  14. Left onto Blue Lick Road and travel 2 miles.
  15. Left onto Lower New Germany Road and travel 1.5 miles.
  16. Right onto Twin Churches Road and travel 1.39 miles.
  17. Left onto New Germany Road and travel just under 1 mile to the New Germany State Park. This state land offers beautiful trails and a small lake for fun for the entire family. Please call 301-895-5453 or visit their website for additional details.
  18. Continue on New Germany Road for approximately 7.5 miles.
  19. Left onto Bittinger Road/MD-495 South.
  20. Slight right onto Glendale Road and travel approximately 5 miles.
  21. Right onto Garrett Highway/US-219 North and travel approximately 5 miles.
  22. Left on Visitors Center Drive ending at the Garrett County Visitors Center on the left.
