If there’s one thing we all love, it’s three-day weekends!
Our last big winter holiday is President’s Day, and it’s usually a very popular weekend to visit! The benefit of coming on a holiday weekend is that most local places/stores will offer special discounts and there are usually tons of events. We’re going to break down some great ways to spend your holiday weekend if you’re visiting!
- Head to Wisp Resort – While most well known for skiing/snowboarding, Wisp Resort actually has a wide array of winter activities for all ages and skill levels. With more than 35 slopes and 7 lifts, there’s a lot of mountain to cover! Wisp has excellent instructors available for beginners and children, too. Wisp also groomed tubing lanes, with magic carpets to get you to the top, an ice skating rink, and the year-round mountain coaster! The best part about winter, and Wisp Resort, is that all of these activities are great whether the sun is shining or the snow is falling.
- Check out Oakland Winterfest – Celebrating winter is something we do very well, so we bottle up our love for winter into a weekend every year as our way of sharing it with you. Just a few minutes south of Deep Creek Lake is small town Oakland, Maryland, and during President’s Day Weekend, it’s also home to Winterfest. The brick sidewalks are decorated with ice sculptures of all shapes and sizes, a horse-drawn sleigh is waiting to glide you through downtown, and there are so many shops and museums to explore. There are even live ice-carving demonstrations! If you haven’t visited Oakland, this is the perfect weekend to get acquainted with our town. Even for locals, Winterfest is a must-see every year, and it’s a great way to spend and afternoon. We also have a very special surprise this year, we’ll see you there!
- Catch a Live Band – Almost every nightlife spot at the lake offers live entertainment on the weekends. Since President’s Weekend is a three-day weekend, you’ll most likely find bands Friday, Saturday, AND Sunday nights. Pick your favorite spot and check their Facebook page or website for their line-ups for the weekend! Most bands have their own pages where you can sample their music. Being such a big weekend, most of the bands playing are some of the local best.
- Take a Hike (Literally) – One of the cheapest, best ways to really get in sync with winter is to explore one of our amazing state parks! Much like skiing, hiking does enough to keep your body warm while you’re out in the weather, and after you see some of the views, trust us, you won’t even remember you’re cold. Swallow Falls State Park is about as Instagram-worthy as they come, and it’s even more beautiful with a blanket of snow.
While these are all great ways to spend the weekend, there’s certainly nothing wrong with hiding out all weekend and enjoying some R&R. If you’re looking for more fun ways to spend your weekend or looking for something more specific, let us know!! We’re happy to help!
