Memorial Day is usually everyone’s official start to summer, and it’s finally here! It’s the first three-day weekend of the season, school is out (or almost out!), boats are on the water, and we’re ready to cannonball right into summer. Deep Creek Lake is a very popular destination for Memorial Day Weekend, and rightly so, as it’s the perfect weekend getaway. We piled up some of our favorite things to do during the long weekend to give you guys some awesome ideas if you’re visiting!

Get Your Feet Wet – It’s finally lake season again, and there’s no better time to jump into the waters than Memorial Day Weekend! Whether you spend an afternoon at Deep Creek Lake State Park’s sandy beach or rent a boat to zip across the lake, it’s going to be a good weekend for it. If you’re looking to test your balance on a stand-up paddleboard or paddle through the coves on a kayak, High Mountain Sports will not only rent the equipment, they’ll also deliver it! HMS offers bikes, too. If you’re not up for jumping in the lake yet, several rentals have community pools or indoor pools, and there’s also an aquatic center. The benefit of hitting the lake, too, is that if you’re already wet, you won’t mind a little rain.

Test Your Palate – If you’re visiting for the weekend and looking for an adventure that’s 21+, check out the wine and beer tour! The 4-hour excursion includes three local hot spots to stop and taste, plus, you’ll be chauffeured by the included driving service! Sip, taste, and swish locally produced beer from Mountain State Brewing Company and selected wine and drafts from DC’s Bar & Restaurant and Black Bear.

Take Your Food Outside – Now that we have warm weather and daylight well past dinner time, it’s a great time to spend as much time as possible outside. Most vacation rental homes have outdoor grills and fire-pits, perfect for grilling or roasting in this beautiful weather! There’s nothing better than enjoying a warm, gooey smores after a day on the lake. If you’re not up for the hassle of outdoor cooking, you can still enjoy outdoor dining at several local restaurants! Dutch’s, Mountain State Brewing Company, Smiley’s, Black Bear, & Uno’s all offer either covered porch or fully outdoor dining.

Revisit the Old DaysThe Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center recently reopened Friends Store & Farm, a property that dates back to 1700! Located just a few miles north of Wisp Resort on Sang Run Road, you can take part in several activities, including candle dipping, dutch oven baking demos, hay rides, hiking, and more! It’s a great way to disconnect from the world for a little while and also make some useful crafts to take home.

Burn Some Energy – As per usual for May at Deep Creek Lake, we can usually except a passing shower or two over the span of a few days, especially if it’s warm. If the weather is questionable but you don’t want your plans to be, check out Smiley’s Fun Zone or Funland! Both of these great places offer the full afternoon package: food, indoor activities, outdoor activities, and ice cream. Enjoy arcade games, lazer tag, mini golf, go carts…we could go on. It’s a great way work around the weather, as there’s plenty to do rain or shine, and you don’t have to rain check your entire afternoon. And don’t worry, adults can play, too!

Most importantly, though, make some memories and take a minute to remember all of the fallen men and women who we honor on Memorial Day. Whether you spend all weekend knocking things off your lake bucket list or spend the weekend relaxing, we hope that everyone enjoys their stay at Deep Creek Lake!
