Did you know there are 10 panhandles in America? Western Maryland is one of them!
National Geographic recently published an article about each of the 10 panhandle locations and ranked our area as #5 in terms of travel appeal. Maryland is one of four states on the east coast with the special geographical feature. Our neighboring state of West Virginia has 2 panhandles and is just a short drive away from our area.
The article highlighted our rural and mountainous terrain, our wonderful trail system, and some the amazing outdoor activities we offer including Maryland’s largest freshwater lake. As for football, we welcome all team’s fans, however, most restaurants and bars feature the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, and Washington Redskins games when available. And yes, the Eastern Continental Divide runs right through the heart of Garrett County and the marker sign can be seen along Interstate 68 west of Deep Creek Lake. The 16.9 mile Big Savage Trail is challenging and beautiful for anyone interested in hiking it’s terrain. Stop by Savage River State Forest and purchase your backpacking and camping permits.
What are you waiting for? Reserve a destination vacation to Deep Creek Lake and experience what our panhandle area has to offer!
